Text Box: Lipochrome Canaries Part VI

Rose Ivory-  sex linked mutation which appeared for the first time in red canaries. This factor causes the pigment saturation level to be reduced practically in half. Apparently the Ivory factor affects the normal structure of the feather and causes a slight expansion of the queratin when the red pigment is deposited on the lower part of the feather cortex, this causes the feathering to be of a softer texture (Theory # 1) The 2nd theory suggests that the pigment is deposited on the feather barbs but not on the barbules which causes less pigment to be deposited and therefore less saturation.

MOST COMMON  DEFFECTS:

· Lack of pigmentation on flight feathers

· Patchy darker coloration, particularly on the head

· Dull and rough feathering caused by over pigmentation

· Light or white around the belly and cloacae

· Excessive frost around neck area

· Check mark frost on mantle, usually females

· Too large frost marks, lunettes should be dainty

Some suggestions:

· You should use Red males carriers of Rose in your breeding program to keep the color from fading.

· The blue optical factor should be avoided in Rose Ivories so that the rose coloration shows itself pure.
